Biblical counseling is the guided process of applying the wisdom of God to the difficulties in our lives. It acknowledges that the Bible is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate and equipped for every good work (2 Tim. 3:16), knowing that in God’s divine power He has given us everything pertaining to life and godliness in Scripture (2 Pet. 1:3). Biblical counseling uses these truths, with grace and love, to provide encouragement, healing, and wisdom.
There are important differences between biblical counseling and the counseling one would receive through a licensed secular counselor – which is who you would find if you looked up ‘counselor’ or ‘therapist’ in a directory. That person would have training in the social and medical fields related to psychology. While there can be great value in these practices, what Valley Bible Church’s counseling ministry provides is often referred to as “spiritual counseling.” Based on the authority and sufficiency of God’s Word, trained pastors take into account the sinfulness of man and our need to be reconciled to a holy God – a process filled with hope.
Many people might benefit from biblical counseling. The fallen world, our own sinfulness, and the devil all act against us. Anyone wanting to prevent their effects, to heal from them, or to stand alongside others as they journey through the same could find help and support through biblical counseling. These include topics like:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Anger
- Marriage difficulties
- Child and family relationships
- Abuse
- Addiction
- Financial counseling
- Crisis or trauma counseling
- Pre-engagement or pre-marriage counseling
We at Valley Bible know that all people suffer, struggle, hurt, doubt, and stand alongside others who do the same. And we want to be there for you as you do. VBC's counseling ministry – called the Bridge Ministries – is made available completely free of charge. This pastoral counseling service is available not only to anyone in the church body, but also to the community at large. You do not have to be a Christian to take , but you should be aware that the Gospel will be at the heart of what we discuss.
Counseling is a broad term for what can look like many different things. It may mean a simple phone call to get an outside opinion on a difficult decision, or it could be regular meetings for some time. It will be our goal to do everything we can to help you bridge whatever gap is between you and your biblical joy, getting you back onto the road of sanctification (being like Christ) with grace and truth.
If you or someone you know might benefit from pastoral counseling, please reach out. More information can be found on the counseling page, by email, or by calling (509) 928-5161 to speak with someone on staff directly.
Far from being a burden, we would be honored to stand by you and help however we can!
