How Do I Love Thee

“How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.” Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “How Do I Love Thee? (Sonnet 43)” begins this way.

Is it possible to count the ways in which God loves us, or we love one another?

Yes, in a sense. How does God love us? The Lord tells us in Jeremiah 31:3, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore I have drawn you with lovingkindness.” His love is perhaps best seen in the Gospel by which we are saved: “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Rom 5:8).

God’s love for us is immeasurable, vast, and infinite. We can count on His love, for He is eternally committed to loving us by His covenant with us. We can’t say that about our love for Him or our love for one another.

Still, we are commanded to Him, and one another “even as He has loved us.” And “we love because He first loved us.” Just as His love is enduring and practical, so ours is to be for one another.

If you are struggling to understand how to love one another in practical ways, let me give you some help with the “One Another’s” of the Bible. There are around 60 “one another” verses in the New Testament. They are, in essence, the practical outworking of Christ’s command that we love one another as He has loved us. In fact, 20 of these are a repeat to love one another, or includes love in some way.

Here are some of the “One Another” verses:

    • Wash one another’s feet… John 13:14
    • Love one another… John 13:34,1 Peter 1:22, 1 John 3:11 (etc)
    • Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another… Romans 12:10
    • Live in harmony with one another… Romans 12:16
    • Owe nothing except to love one another… Romans 13:8
    • Stop passing judgment on one another… Romans 14:13
    • Accept one another… Romans 15:7
    • Instruct one another… Romans 15:14
    • Greet one another with a holy kiss… Romans 16:16, 1 Corinthians 16:20, 2 Corinthians 13:12, 1 Peter 5:14
    • Agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you… 1 Corinthians 1:10, Philippians 4:2
    • Serve one another in love… Galatians 5:13
    • Bearing with one another in love… Ephesians 4:2
    • Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you… Ephesians 4:32
    • Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs… Ephesians 5:19
    • Submit to one another… Ephesians 5:21
    • Bearing with one another, and forgiving one another… Colossians 3:13
    • Teach and admonish one another… Colossians 3:16
    • Therefore encourage one another and build each other up… 1 Thessalonians 5:11, Hebrews 10:25
    • But encourage one another daily… Hebrews 3:13
    • And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds… Hebrews 10:24
    • Brothers, do not slander one another… James 4:11
    • Live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble…1 Peter 3:8
    • Offer hospitality to one another… 1 Peter 4:9
    • Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another… 1 Peter 5:5
    • We have fellowship with one another…1 John 1:7
    • Be at peace with one another… Mark 9:50
    • Have the same care for one another… 1 Corinthians 12:25
    • Bear one another’s burdens… Galatians 6:2
    • Therefore encourage each other with these words… 1 Thessalonians 4:18
    • Live in peace with one other… 1 Thessalonians 5:13
    • Do not complain against one other… James 5:9
    • Therefore confess your sins to one another… James 5:16

When we love one another, we are reflecting Christ’s love. This is achievable if we practice these one-another commands. Is it always easy? No, but the more we practice them, the more natural it comes by His grace. It’s a purposeful decision we make daily. The world is watching us as Christians. Now, more than ever, the world needs to see that we are Christians by our love for one another.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways.
