This post is a follow-up message from Pastor Ben's sermon entitled "Election Year Hope". [Watch video]
Psalm 33 gives us confidence that God is ultimately in control of politics. We can wring our hands, be confused and worry about the present state of politics in our nation, but what does that do? Nothing. “The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples” (Psalm 33:10). He has this.
But does this mean that we do nothing? Certainly hand-wringing, worry and confusion do nothing, but God has called us to do something that is really quite powerful: Pray.
“First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
I urge you to pray for our leaders and our nation. What if Christians in the United States decided to obey God and committed themselves to pray consistently for our nation during this election cycle? We must trust that He has this. But we must also do what He expects of us. The Apostle Paul said we are to pray for our leaders “so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity.” The fear of many is that the present election will result in losing the religious liberties we enjoy that enable us “to lead a tranquil and quiet life.” But if we lose those freedoms due to our own prayerlessness, that would be tragic indeed. Pray.
