How Quickly Things Change

We thought it would never end, the smoke and the heat. The heat was manageable for a time. The smoke was a bother. But together they became a problem, even unhealthy. Poor air quality coupled with high temperatures really made for a long and uncomfortable stretch of summer. It was relentless. Day after day the weather reports were the same with no end in sight. It seemed as if it would never end.

But then it did. All of a sudden, as if a switch were switched, the rain fell, a breeze; then lower temperatures had everyone donning long sleeves and sweaters. My how quickly things change. Everything changes—except God.

Psalm 121 is a reminder of the unchangeable nature of God in the face of our pitiful ever-changing human existence. The psalm speaks in such absolute terms of God’s protection for us. He is eternal and all-powerful. He will not let your foot slip. He never sleeps. He watches over you day and night. He will protect your life from evil forever. Always? Yes, always. We have a hard time seeing that God is fully protecting us all the time because many things happen to us that lead us to question if He is indeed our Protector. Reread the words.

     I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help?

     My help comes from the Lord

     Who made heaven and earth.

     He will not allow your foot to be moved;

     He who keeps you will not slumber.

     Behold, He who keeps Israel

     Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

     The Lord is your keeper;

     The Lord is your shade at your right hand.

     The sun shall not strike you by day,

     Nor the moon by night.

     The Lord shall preserve you from all evil;

     He shall preserve your soul.

     The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in

     From this time forth, and even forevermore.

He does not change, but we do. We change our clothes, change our minds. Our children change every day. Our circumstances change. Our health changes, our mood changes, our bank balance changes. So, we are in need of help—always.

Thus, the question, “From whence comes my help?” And the answer is that our help comes from the Eternal, Sovereign, Creator God. He does not change.

We will ever need help because change frequently comes in the form of trouble, affliction, adversity, trauma, and travails. Whatever happens our way, the unquestionable truth of Psalm 121 is that God is our Guardian, who protects us now and forever absolutely from absolute harm. You are, in a sense, indestructible in Christ, for you are held in a changeless, eternal relationship by His sovereign grace.

The weather changed and will change once again. He will not.
